Not so much September 26, 2007
Posted by anton in : Training , 1 comment so farNot so much to report lately… Have been running mostly, getting ready for the fall/winter trifecta: Marine Corps Marathon,JFK 50 Miler and then Goofy Challenge @ Disney World.. October,November,January.
Long runs on the weekend and speed work mid week…like today ,when it’s 90 degrees and 85% humidity. Just ghastly, me reduced to a big ball of sweat. Cooler weather on the way.
This weekend coming I’m going to scoot down to Cambridge,MD and watch my friend Scott participate in Chessieman, an Independant Iron-distance race…Won’t go for the start but will make it down before the end of the first bike loop. Running the AT on Sunday with some folks.
Next weekend I’m off to the Double and Triple Ironman, not as a participant ,as you know by now, but to crew for a fellow doing the Triple.
I hope to use it as chance to get a handle on training that won’t drive me to injury..
Speaking of the hip…seems ok. I mean I’m running 45 to 50 miles a week but biking very little.Hip feels fine. Have re-fit the bike including going back to an old saddle. I just think it was an overuse injury that got away form me…
Have started taking a yoga class offered at my school…it is really helping with flexibility…which may have been part of my hip problem.
Last weekends workouts: Run 21 miles on Saturday. Run 11 on Sunday.
This coming weekend: Run 10 miles Friday. Run 21 to 26 on Sunday. May run a little while at Chessieman.
Today’s speed work: 6 x 800 meters at 3:50 pace (This is called “Yasso’s” after Bart Yasso.) you build up to 10 with the last set done 10 days before your target Marathon which for me is Goofy. Also did 4x hill repeats. Run up a steep hill as fast as possible for 15 seconds then walk down…repeat.
Sniff, hack and gurgle September 15, 2007
Posted by anton in : Training , add a commentGood week, this…sort of.
Had some good runs, got on the bike without any hip pain, so that seems to be clearing up…Had a Yoga class on Tuesday, my first on in 30 years.
Definately working on my flexibility and I think that is one of the reasons my hip soreness is improving…Even got into the pool this week which felt good. I let that slide since I knew I wouldn’t be going to the Double.
Speaking of that…Kirb, the RD was kind enough to defer my entry to next year…which has me psyched again! This year I volunteered to crew and have been hooked up with a Triple who needed somone to tend his needs for three days. Sounds like fun and will give me a good inside on how it all works…that will surely reduce anxiety about next years race. Plan to work up a year long schedule for next years Double and toss it around with some experienced folks when I go down.
This weekends plans have gone out the window…or should I say disappeared in a pile of kleenex.
Woke the other morning ,after a rough night, will a cold…a full on nasal onslaught with stuff dripping out of just about every hole on my face…
Now it’s settled in my chest… following the maxim: “In the head,go ahead. In the chest, take a rest.” It means I’ll miss a long run and a local low key half marathon tomorrow…oh well..got to let that go. Which is good because I’m hacking up nasty looking gack! Still on track and feeling good about my running fitness for Marine Corps and JFK 50 miler. May try to spin on the trainer some…just to keep some snap in the legs.
Will take some time to read the blogs of some other folks (inspiring stuff!) and tinker with the endurable.us web site to see how that works.

Double. Double? Toil and trouble. September 6, 2007
Posted by anton in : Angst , 2 commentsI had planned to use that title when I finished the Double on October 7th.
Had to use it now…the Double just isn’t going to happen …at least this year.
My hip really flares up on the bike and even though I’ve had my position tweeked…I am too far in the hole to get through the Double without really messing myself up. I’ve missed three weekends of biking….Big miles.
Running is fine for some odd reason…ran 18 today in hot and nasty conditions.
Deep breath. Shrug. Move on.
Since my running is ok, I’m still on a guarded track for Marine Corps Marathon and then the JFK 50 Miler with Scott (Beads 1985.) then Goofy Challenge for the third and last time…I love that race, butthere are too many other races I’d like to do…
My wife…bless her…says whenever I want to go for the double again…she’s there for support.
So…I’ll tuck this away on the back of the mental files…
